Student researcher: Tang Dongni (2838526t@student.gla.ac.uk) Project supervisor: Dr Eugene Dawydiak (eugene.dawydiak@glasgow.ac.uk)

Invitation You are being invited to take part in an online research study. You should be 18 years old or above and have a good level of English proficiency to take part. Before you decide to start, it is important for you to know why the research is being conducted and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully.

What is the purpose of the study? The purpose of this study is to explore disgust sensitivity and attitudes towards mental health conditions. Three mental health conditions will be involved: depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Do I have to take part? No, it is entirely your decision whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part, you will be asked to provide consent online. Even after consenting, you are still free to withdraw at any time without giving a reason.

It is recommended that your English proficiency is sufficient to effectively complete the surveys. If you have difficulty, you may contact the researcher or choose to withdraw.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential? Yes, no personally identifying information will be gathered during the survey and as such your taking part in this study will be entirely confidential. Because we won’t be able to identify your answers, there is no chance of retracting your data once you click the last submit button (the final page of the study provides an alert to this).

If you wish to withdraw from the study, you must discontinue by closing the browser before completing the study.

What will participation involve? You will first be asked questions about your age and gender identity. Then, you will read three narrative descriptions, each about an individual diagnosed with one of the following mental health disorders: schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. After each description, you will be asked to rate your feelings towards the individual through a series of questions. Finally, you will complete a disgust sensitivity scale, which includes concepts related to pathogen, moral, and sexual disgust. We anticipate that participation will take approximately 20 minutes.

We hope that participating in our research will be a worthwhile experience for you. Your opinions and experiences are extremely valuable to us.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part in the study? There are no anticipated disadvantages in participating, however, if you do feel adversely affected by items related to mental illness or those addressing pathogen, sexual or moral disgust, please feel free to discontinue your participation.
