Judgments of moral standing: between helpfulness and harm

This study forms part of a research project for a master’s degree in Psychological Studies.

You are being invited to participate in a research study. Please read the following information carefully before you decide whether you would like to take part.

What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this study is to investigate moral decision-making.

Why have I been invited to participate?

This research investigates the judgments of English speakers over 18 years of age. If you are part of this group, we invite you to participate.

Do I have to take part?

Your participation is voluntary. If you decide to take part, you can still withdraw at any time and without giving a reason.

What would my participation involve?

You will be asked to read several short texts describing a person or animal. You will then be asked to answer questions about your thoughts regarding the person or animal described. Additionally, you will be asked to answer demographic questions about yourself, including information about age, gender and religion. You will also be asked questions about how you usually make decisions. There are no correct answers, and you can withdraw from the study at any time by closing your browser. The entire procedure will take approximately 25-30 minutes.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

All information which is collected about you for the study will be kept strictly confidential. We will not collect any information from which you could be identified personally, such as your name or address.

What will happen to the results of the research study?

The information we collect will be stored on a password-protected computer in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The data will be analysed as part of a master’s thesis and deleted when the project has been completed.

The project has been reviewed by the College of Social Sciences Research Ethics Forum of the University of Glasgow.
