Participant Information Sheet

Study Title: Emotional Responses to Feedback in Educational Contexts

Invitation and brief summary:

You are being invited to participate in the research study titled “Emotional Responses to Feedback in Educational Contexts” which will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. This study aims to investigate how students perceive and emotionally respond to feedback in educational institutions, considering factors such as pronominal reference (e.g., “your” vs. “the”) and feedback polarity (whether the feedback focuses on something that was done well, or where things could be improved). Your input will help to gain insights into the emotional aspects of feedback reception and engagement with educational feedback.

Before you decide to take part, it is important to understand why the research is taking place, and what it will involve. Please read the following information carefully before deciding to participate in this study.

Do I have to take part?

Participation in this study is completely voluntary. You have the option to decide whether or not you wish to take part. If you do choose to participate, you can withdraw at any time without providing a reason to the researcher, and your decision to withdraw will not have any consequences.

Why have I been chosen to take part?

You have been chosen to take part in this study because you are aged over 16 years old, and you are a current undergraduate student at a UK university.

What is involved if I agree to take part?

If you agree to take part in this study, you will first be asked to read and agree to a consent form. You will then be asked to respond to open-ended questions regarding your perspectives on feedback and emotional reactions in educational contexts. You will then have the opportunity to select your feedback preference. Your responses will be collected and analysed as part of the research.

The only demographic information asked will be your age, gender, and if you are in pre honours or honours years at university. If you would like to withdraw at any point during the study, please do this before submitting your responses. Experimentum is a GDPR compliant website, prioritising the security and privacy of your data. Your data will be stored securely on a password-protected drive, accessible only to the researcher and supervisor.

What will happen to the results of this research study?

The results of this research study will be used for research and academic purposes. Data, without any personal identifying information, may be made publicly available in an online data base to be re-analysed by other researchers. However, any potentially identifying information included in open-ended responses will be carefully removed before the data is uploaded to any public archive. Anonymous findings will be published in a student dissertation, and may be published in research reports, articles, and other media. Your individual responses will not be identifiable. A summary of the results can be made available to you upon request.
