My name is Brinkley Holshouser, and I am a fellow student at the University of Glasgow. You are being invited to take part in a research study, and it is important that before you participate, you are informed on the purpose of the research and what your participation involves. Please take your time to read this form.

What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this study is to develop a better understanding of the relationship between loneliness and behavioural emotion regulation in the university student population. Behavioural emotion regulation is best explained as the conscious strategies and actions we employ when facing emotionally arousing stimuli.

Why have I been chosen?

You have been chosen because you are a university student between the age of 18 to 24.

Do I have to take part?

No. Your participation in this study is completely up to you. If you decide to participate, you will be asked for your consent. You are free to withdraw at any point within the study, no questions asked.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

Your taking part in this study will be confidential. We will not be able to identify your answers after you submit them, and therefore will not be able to delete them after your submission, so we ask that if you wish to withdraw from the study, you do so by clicking the discontinue button before clicking the submit button.

What will my participation involve?

You will first answer the following demographic information: gender identity, age, year of study, and university name. You will then fill out two short questionnaires. The first questionnaire will be related to your behavioural emotion regulation strategies and the second will be related to your experience of loneliness. The study should take no more than 10 minutes in total

What will happen to the results of the research study?

Your data is entirely anonymous and unidentifiable and will be gathered using GDPR compliant software and stored on a secure server. Data, without any personal identifying information, may be made publicly available in an online database for re-analysis by other researchers. Anonymous results of this study will be presented in an undergraduate student dissertation and may also be presented at conferences or published in journals, books, and the popular media. If you would like a summary of the results, this can be made available to you upon request from the researchers. All data and results will be anonymous, kept confidential, and securely stored at all times. All data collected will be kept on a password protected computer with an encrypted hard drive for the duration of the project (end date: March 2022). This research is being conducted as part of a fourth-year dissertation. The research has been granted ethical approval.
