You are invited to participate in a research study. It is important for you to understand why the research is being conducted and what it will involve. Please read the following information carefully.

1. What is the purpose of the study?

This study investigates the emotional experience of speaking two languages as a bilingual speaker. We are interested in how your language background and use of your first and second languages may affect the way you feel in your different languages.

2. What will I have to do?

This study includes an online questionnaire that should take about 20 minutes with questions on your: Demographic background; Language proficiency in your second language (English), including a short language test; Emotional experience of speaking your first language and second languages in different contexts; and Free-response questions to describe your experiences of bilingualism in more depth.

3. Why have I been chosen?

You have been chosen because you are a bilingual who speaks English as a second language or who grew up speaking both English and another language to a similar extent.

4. Do I have to participate?

Your participation is strictly voluntary and you may end the questionnaire at any time by simply closing the browser, without giving any reason or explanation to the researchers as to why you want to withdraw.

5. What are the risks and benefits of participating?

Please note that this questionnaire touches on potentially sensitive topics, such as experiences of talking about sex, anger, insults, taking criticism, and swearing in both your first and second languages. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, you may end the survey by closing the browser.

This survey also provides you the opportunity to reflect on your experiences as a bilingual and possibly gain new insights into your experience of emotion in your different languages.

6. Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

All your data is kept confidential and stored in password-protected University systems according to the GDPR. We will not collect any identifiable information (such as your name), and all participants are assigned an anonymous participant ID. Once completed, the anonymised data may be shared on a data sharing platform, such as the Open Science Framework.

In the free response questions, you may share as much or as little as you feel comfortable. If you provide any identifiable information, such as names or places or residence or study, all your answers will be anonymized before data analysis, and only the anonymized version of the data will potentially be shared on Open Science data sharing platforms.

7. What will happen to the results of the research study?

The results will be used for the investigator's M.Sc. dissertation project and possibly for later publications. The anonymous data may be shared on a data sharing platform (such as the Open Science Framework) for secondary analysis.

8. Who can I contact if I want more information?

If you want more information about the study and/or a summary of the anonymised group results, please feel free to contact the researchers: Carly Ottenbreit (2606125O@student.gla.ac.uk) and Wilhelmiina Toivo (wilhelmiina.toivo@glasgow.ac.uk).
