Thank you very much for your participation!

What is the purpose of this study?

The study aims to investigate the foreign language effect on correspondence bias (also called fundamental attribution error).

The foreign language effect is a relatively new area of study that focuses on how an individual's language context affects their decision-making. Studies suggest that thinking in a foreign language decreases cognitive biases, however, a consensus has not been found for the reason behind this. Some believe it is because we are more emotionally detached when thinking in our foreign language(s) while others believe it is because it requires more cognitive effort to speak and think, which then gives our mind more time to think logically about the issue at hand.

The foreign language effect has not yet been studied in relation to the correspondence bias.

Correspondence bias relates to the tendency of individuals to attribute their own behaviour to external causes whilst attributing the same behaviour of others internally. As an example, a person being rude to someone would justify their own behaviour with having a bad day but would attribute the same behaviour to a personality trait when seeing someone else being rude. The supposed reason is that a person knows their own circumstances, which they believe to be more salient, but ignores someone else’s.

This study investigates how thinking in your first language versus one of your second languages will affect the correspondence bias; therefore, some participants will have been presented with a Faroese version of this study, while others will have been presented with an English version.

Can you tell me my results?

I will not be able to provide individual results from this study. This is because every participant will have a random ID to keep the data anonymous. However, I will gladly provide the final report if you are interested. If you want to discuss anything related to the study or request a copy of the final report, feel free to send me an email to the address provided at the bottom of this page.

The supervisor of this study is Dr Wilhelmiina Toivo, who can be contacted by email at Wilhelmiina.Toivo@glasgow.ac.uk.

Thank you again for your time and contribution.
