Gaslighting is a form of emotional and psychological abuse where, through manipulation, an abuser succeeds in warping their target’s reality to assert and gain control over them (Hightower, 2017). We aim to measure an individual’s susceptibility to manipulative gaslighting, which is mostly associated with inter-personal relationships (Miano et al., 2021; Stark, 2019). Specific character traits will be measured using a self-report questionnaire. While susceptibility to gaslighting is a growing phenomenon, it remains novel within the field of psychology and therefore currently lacks a definition and a reliable measurement tool. Based on psychological understanding and current literature, this pilot study will define susceptibility to gaslighting as an individual's likelihood to unconsciously allow their partner to alter their state of reality (Miano et al., 2021; Hightower, 2017). Our questionnaire is open to everyone as we are interested in measuring susceptibility across all genders, ages and cultures.
