You are being invited to a research study. Before you decide to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being conducted and what will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take your time to decide whether you wish to take part. Thank you for reading this.

1. What is the purpose of the study?

The number of international students has been increasing in the United Kingdom, and international students can face challenges in their student experience as they adjust to life in a new country. The aim of this study is to extend the current knowledge of the impact of predictors towards international students’ wellbeing.

2. What will I have to do?

The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete. Before you start, we will ask you to consent to participate in the study. Then we will ask you to complete questionnaires that indicate your level of agreement with questions about social connectedness (the experience of feeling close and connected to others), cultural differences, and English proficiency. We will also ask you to complete some demographic information: gender, age, native language, country of origin, how long you have been in the UK, and your level of study (undergraduate or postgraduate).

3. Why have I been chosen?

You have been invited to take part in this study because you are an international student who is enrolled at a university in the United Kingdom.

4. Do I have to take part?

No, there is no obligation for you to take part in this study.

5. Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

As part of this study, the only demographic information we will collect is age, gender, country of origin, native language, length of stay in the United Kingdom, and whether you are enrolled as a postgraduate student or an undergraduate student. If you feel that you do not wish to complete all this demographic information, that is ok. Your data will be collected using GDPR compliant software and will remain anonymous with no name or email attached to it.

6. What will happen to the results of the research study?

The data obtained via this survey will be kept completely anonymous, gathered in accordance with GDPR compliant software and stored on a secure server. Any data without personal identifying information may be made publicly available within an online database for re-analysis and potential use by other researchers. The anonymous results from this survey will be contained with a Master’s dissertation and may be utilised within presentations, published within journals or articles, or presented on other popular media. This research has been granted ethical approval from the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at The University of Glasgow. All data collected within this study will be kept confidential on a secure and password protected computer. Data will be kept beyond the end of the project (End of August 2023) and the results may be published.

7. Who can I contact if I want more information?

If you would like to gain more information about the study or a summary of the results, or if you have any other questions about this project, please feel free to contact myself (2794828W@student.gla.ac.uk) or my project supervisor (Dr Judith Stevenson).
