You are invited to take part in this study if you are aged between 18-25 and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision. Before doing so, please take the time to read the following information to familiarise yourself with the purpose of the research and what participation will require from you. If you have any questions which are not covered by the information provided, please do not hesitate to contact either the principle researcher or supervisor of this study.

Purpose of Study

This study aims to investigate the impact of watching reality television on the behaviour of viewers, particularly in the context of their relationships with others, in order to enhance the understanding of the ways behaviour is influenced by media.

Procedure

After providing basic demographic information, you will be asked to view 2 short video clips taken from either a popular reality television programme or a sports competition which have been selected based on the results of a pilot study. Please note that these clips may contain strong language and sexual content. You will then complete 2 surveys. The total time you will need to complete the study is approximately 20 minutes. You may complete the study in any location, however the video clips will include sound, so it is important that you are in a suitably quiet environment or are using headphones to enable you to fully engage with the content. Please allow yourself at least 30 uninterrupted minutes for participation.

Security and Anonymity

All responses will be completely confidential, and no identifying information will be recorded. To ensure security, all data will be stored in password-protected files on a password-protected computer and will be accessible only by the principle researcher and supervisor. Data will be subjected to statistical analysis which will then be interpreted and presented as part of an undergraduate dissertation project. This will be completed by 20th March 2020 and can be made available to you upon request.

Risks

The psychological risks associated with this study are negligible and do not extend beyond those of watching reality television in a recreational setting. You will be debriefed in full after the completion of the study, including being fully informed as to the research question being assessed.

You have the right not to participate and if you do choose to participate you retain the right to withdrawal at any time without penalty and without providing a reason.
