You are being invited to take part in a research study. It is important for you to understand why the research is being conducted and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully.

What is the purpose of the study? The current study aims to examine the relationship between thinking patterns and personality characteristics. A further investigation will consider whether their proposed relationship may be mediated by coping strategies.

What does the study entail? If you choose to participate in this study, you will complete a demographic information questionnaire followed by three short surveys. The demographic questionnaire will ask you for information including age, gender identity, ethnicity, if you are currently studying in higher education and if you are currently suffering from a formally diagnosed mental health disorder. The surveys will be used to collect quantifiable data regarding your thinking patterns, your personality characteristics and your habitual use of coping strategies. This study should take no more than ten minutes and can be completed online at a location of your choosing, free from distractions. You will have no time limit to answer questions and you may omit questions you do not wish to answer without providing a reason to researchers. Your responses will be gathered for analysis.

Why have I been chosen? Anyone over the age of sixteen with a good understanding of English is eligible to participate.

Do I have to take part? Completion of this study is optional, and you have the right to refuse participation. If you choose to participate but change your mind during the study, you are free to opt out at any point, without providing a reason to researchers. You may also request that your responses are withdrawn from the data following your participation until 28/02/2023. After this point, data will be finalised and written up.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential? No personal identifying information will be collected for the purpose of this research. All data will be stored securely on password-protected devices only accessible by researchers. Your responses will remain anonymous during analysis. No individual data will be available for distribution.

What will happen to the results of the research study? Your responses to this study will be combined with those of other participants to be analysed in order to test the hypotheses. Anonymised group data will also be included in a report write-up and may be disseminated to the wider academic community.

Who can I contact if I want more information? If you wish to receive any additional information about the study and/or a summary of the anonymised group results, please feel free to contact Alexandra Gillan at 2328763G@student.gla.ac.uk.
